Welcome Joe McCormick to SplitSpot!

We are very excited to introduce Joe McCormick as our new Director of Engineering here at SplitSpot. We sat down with Joe for a quick Q&A about his prior work experience, why he chose SplitSpot and the exciting work we can soon expect from him!

Q: Why did you choose to join the SplitSpot Team?

Joe: I had heard about SplitSpot since it was founded as I was college roommates with one of the co-founders David Mazza, and was really excited when I got the call that they were looking to build out a tech team. I see the opportunity to help build out a team of world class engineers and tackle some big problems with the rental industry.

Q: What makes you excited about your role and working with SplitSpot’s customers?

Joe: I’m really excited to be in the Director of Engineering role as I’m tasked with building out our product (and a team to make it happen). SplitSpot has already been able to establish a successful business without a lot of tech, so I think we’ll be able to really accelerate the company’s growth as we build out our new platform.

Q: Prior to SplitSpot, what were you doing? How can that help you in your current position?

Joe: Before SplitSpot, I spent seven years at ezCater which is a marketplace for business catering. My experience there has a lot of direct translation to the problems we face at SplitSpot but instead of connecting food orders to caterers I now get to connect potential tenants to landlords. In addition while at ezCater I spent two years in an engineering management role so I’ve had the opportunity to build out a few teams which will help as I look to build out the SplitSpot engineering team

Q: What is one experience in your career that has helped shape who you are?

Joe: When at ezCater I had the opportunity to work on some really challenging projects within my first year outside of college. That experience really threw me in the deep end but gave me a lot of opportunities to learn on the job and figure out how to deliver successfully in a fast-paced environment.

Q: Where did you grow up and go to school?

Joe: I grew up in Melrose which is just north of Boston and went to Malden Catholic for high school. I then attended Harvard where I obtained a degree in Computer Science

Q: What have your rental experiences been in the Boston area?

Joe: I don’t actually have any rental experience, I transitioned from college to living at my parents’ house before saving up to buy a home.

Q: Where can we find you on the weekends? How do you like to spend your free time?

Joe: When not working I can be found spending time with my wife and our one-year old son Carter. We love hanging outside and going for walks together, he also really likes to go swimming in his grandparents’ pool.
